Teacher training and development

FACE regional team members are experienced trainers and run CPD sessions throughout the year. Sessions are often subject based or may focus on specific topics such as maths, art or science.

We help you to:

  • Evaluate resources available to support your teaching
  • Learn how to arrange safe, enjoyable, curriculum-linked visits
  • Find out how farming fits into the curriculum
  • Design teaching topics based on farming and the countryside
  • Take part in a farm visit to put your learning into practice

Seminars

Seminars offer an opportunity to hear from a range of providers and to network informally with like-minded educators and local farmers and outdoor educators. They are an excellent source of new ideas and inspiration.

Initial Teacher Education

Teacher training in one form or another has always been a priority for FACE.

Aim

To incorporate delivery of accredited training to teachers and Initial Teacher Training students with the aim of engaging more teachers to become involved in education about the farming industry.

FACE has established relationships with a variety of teacher training providers and offers training sessions (which can be accredited through the Open College Network) to provide trainee teachers with the confidence, knowledge and tools to incorporate food, farming and countryside topics into their classroom teaching. They also learn how to organise a safe and enjoyable class visit to a farm.

 

The Open College Network course

This one-day course for trainee teachers uses interactive sessions to introduce attendees to the ways in which food and farming topics can be used in the classroom and helps students to understand how a wide variety of curriculum subjects can be enhanced.

The course is structured as follows:

1. Curriculum Links to the Farming Industry

  • Preparation of a simple farming topic for either Key Stage 1 or Key Stage 2 which can be integrated into the national curriculum

2. Using Resources in the Classroom

  • Introduction to food and farming resources available and how to access them. Individual review of a chosen farming resources

3. Visiting the Farm

  • Preparation of an itemised checklist explaining the steps necessary when arranging a farm visit

Courses are held on a farm so that the afternoon can be spent in practical application of some of the topics covered during the morning session.

Case study

A strong partnership has been built between FACE, the Keele and North Staffordshire Primary SCITT(School Centred Initial Teacher Training) based at Keele University and FACE member Dorrington Hall Farm. This group has worked together on a number of courses for trainee teachers.

For several years FACE has successfully delivered initial teacher training at the Cheshire Show. This fulfils the Show Society's aims to increase the educational benefits of the show and enhances the students' training by introducing them to ways of incorporating food and farming into their classroom teaching.
